The practice of pilates is designed to increase strength and flexibility while developing alignment, balance, coordination, and tone. Started by Joseph Pilates in the early 20th century as a form of rehabilitation, pilates quickly caught the attention of professional dancers and athletes, who were attracted to the practice because it could both advance their abilities and heal them in times of injury. The word "yoga" comes from the Sanskrit word "yuj" which means "to yoke" as in unify, with the universal spirit. The physical postures of yoga were originally designed to prepare the body for long meditations, though the practice has gone through many incarnations during its 5,000+ year history. Today, there are hundreds of styles of yoga practiced all over the world, with focuses that range from breathing techniques to poses that rival Western gymnastics.
